ESTABLISHMENT AND MANDATE OF THE SMCTI-REC

St. Mary’s College of Tagum Inc. has created the Research Ethics Committee (REC) in order to address the mandate of the Commission on Higher Education to create an ethics committee solely responsible in reviewing the protocols of various researches to ensure its technical and ethical merits. Any form of research endeavor must be grounded on solid ethical standards. Hence, all forms of ethics reviews are geared towards the protection and safety of human participants.

The SMCTI-REC was established in June 2018. The functions of the committee are: (1) to develop, recommend, and implement guidelines on the ethical review of research protocols; (2) to ensure satisfactory review of submitted research protocols by following standard operating procedures; (3) to issue ethics clearance to approved research protocols; (4) to ensure the protection of the rights and the well-being and safety of human participants in research; (5) to ensure the protection of the integrity of the scientific data; and (6) to address and act on concerns of research participants and other stakeholders.

Only complete submissions directed to the committee shall be accepted and reviewed by the SMCTI-REC. The SMCTI-REC shall ensure that all research proposals will comply with the ethical and scientific standards in conducting researches involving human participants.
