In the academic year 1983-1984, St. Mary’s College of Tagum, Inc. (SMCTI) accepted the first batch of Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering students. On July 19, 1989, the school produced the first civil engineer. For over 38 years, the program has produced numerous licensed civil engineers. Some are retired and have left a legacy. Some are veterans that are in charge of valuable projects. Some are instructors teaching future engineers. Some are beginners focusing on building their careers.
The Goal of the Civil Engineering Program of SMCTI is to produce highly competent Civil Engineers that are God-centered and ethical.
The educational objectives of the program are as follows:
-
- Pursue their lifelong learning process by attaining advanced degrees in engineering or other professional education, and by engaging in research activities that address issues of the community;
- Take active participation in their community, church, and professional organizations as socially responsible citizens who embody ethical and professional excellence steeped in the Ignacian Marian education;
- Be in leadership positions and be recognized as critical and inventive thinkers, who create designs and solutions that are ecological, safe, and sustainable; and
- Become significant contributors to society as effective collaborators with excellent communication and people skills, competence in Information Technology, and passion for innovation.
Graduates of Civil Engineering are expected to be able to:
-
- Apply creatively the knowledge of mathematics and science to solve complex civil engineering problems in both conventional and innovative ways;
- Design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data critically and competently;
- Design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints, in accordance with standards;
- Function in multidisciplinary and multi-cultural teams in a spirit of mutual respect for effective collaborative work;
- Identify, formulate, and solve complex civil engineering problems systematically and competently;
- Understand professional and ethical responsibility and respond in accordance to Christian values;
- Communicate effectively civil engineering activities with the engineering community and with society at large;
- Understand the impact of civil engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal context;
- Recognize the need for, and engage in life-long learning as witnesses to faith, excellence, and service;
- Know contemporary issues and act responsibly for the common good;
- Use appropriate and innovative techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for civil engineering practice;
- Know and understand engineering and management principles as a member and leader of a team, and to effectively manage projects in a multidisciplinary environment;
- Understand at least one specialized field of civil engineering practice to be of greater service to the community.
